The Path of Remembrance
This page is a heartfelt tribute to all the Stafford Shotokan Karate members we hold dear, whose presence graced our lives but are now sadly no longer with us. Their absence leaves a profound ache in our hearts, and their memory burns brightly within us. We vow to carry their spirit — their strength, passion, and unwavering dedication — in every training session, and every step we take.
Forever, we will hold them close in our thoughts, honouring their legacy with unwavering love and gratitude.

It is with great sadness that we share the saddening news of the passing of our beloved karateka, Nigel Swan.
Nigel’s journey was one of resilience and passion. A proud ex-firefighter, he found solace and purpose in karate, dedicating himself wholeheartedly to the art he cherished. From his studies at SKI Penkridge to a heartfelt desire to reignite his martial journey, Nigel’s spirit never wavered. In October 2021, he became a cherished member of SSK, and from that moment, he became more than just a student – he became family.
His warm smile and infectious enthusiasm drew everyone to him. Nigel embraced every club function and social event with genuine joy and openness, earning the love and respect of all who knew him. His rapid progress was a testament to his dedication; by July 2026, Nigel was to participate in his last ever grading, he achieved Temporary 1st kyu.
Nigel was a true seeker of knowledge, always asking profound questions about the depths of karate, eager to uncover the meanings and principles behind every technique and term. His thirst for understanding went beyond the dojo; he studied karate in his own time, showing a rare passion and commitment that inspired us all.
The loss of Nigel leaves a deep void in our hearts and our dojo family. He was not just a student, but a vibrant, fun-loving soul whose spirit illuminated our community. We will cherish his memory forever and hold his spirit close as we continue our journey in the art he loved so dearly.
Meiyo (Honour)
In heartfelt devotion, to truly honour Nigel’s enduring spirit, SSK has, in beautiful accordance with the respected Japanese tradition, bestowed upon him a sacred new spiritual name. This name is a radiant reflection of his unwavering dedication, formidable strength, and immense contributions to the art of karate and reflects his name.
The name chosen for Nigel, a beacon of grace and resilience, is “Hakuchō” 白鳥 — meaning White Bird or Swan.
A symbol of soaring elegance, purity, and serenity, the swan embodies the essence of Nigel’s spirit. As he is forever remembered, let us carry his memory with reverence, grace, and the unwavering pride of his remarkable journey.
私たちの思い出が、いつまでも心に残りますように。
